What is ION?
ION is a rapid transit system that will connect the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo. Featuring electric trains running along a rapidway separated from regular traffic, it’s a fast, reliable and convenient way to travel. The system will also include bus rapid transit in its initial stages, with features like frequent service, limited stops and signal priority to ensure speed and efficiency.
What will be completed in Stage 1?
Stage 1, is slated for completion in 2018, and will consist of:
- 22 stations along a 36 km transit corridor.
- Light rail transit between Conestoga Mall in Waterloo and Fairview Park in Kitchener (19 km).
- Bus rapid transit between Fairview Park in Kitchener and the Ainslie Street Terminal in Cambridge (17 km).
What can we expect in Stage 2?
Stage 2 will see all bus rapid transit converted to light rail transit, creating a 37 km route across the three urban centres.
